The location of Lima has roots in Inca culture, upon which the colonial city was founded by conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535. It at one point was the political hub of South America. The heart of Lima began with the Plaza de Armas. From there, religious structures rose, including the Archbishop’s Palace of Lima, Lima Cathedral, and the San Francisco Monastery (where you’ll find pits stacked with skulls and bones). Learn more about the political history of Lima at the Government Palace, stroll arm in arm with a significant other through Parque del Amor, or go shopping at the open-air Larcomar mall. After dining on sea-front cliffs, follow the boardwalk down to the beach.
