Tambomachay

Tambomachay is a series of stone terraces traversed by aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls. It’s located 8 km northeast of Cusco. The name indicates its use: tampu means lodging, and mach’ay means resting place or caves. It may have been an Incan military outpost, a spa resort for the elite, and a temple for water worship. The Inca believed water was the source of life and that bathing could purify the mind and body. The four niches where offerings may have been placed also indicate it was a place for water worship. Nearby springs flow through aquaducts into a font. Tambomachay is an example of architecture well-integrated into the landscape.

Tambomachay

Tambomachay could have served more than one purpose – a military outpost, a spa resort, and a temple. As you wander around this site or as you listen to a guide, look for the evidence of each function. Its vantage point was perfect to guard approaches to Cusco. Aqueducts lead to stone baths with drainage systems. And a small spring and niches to place offerings indicate the Incans gathered to worship water. The quiet, secluded site, with the murmuring of springs, gives Tambomachay a peaceful atmosphere.
