Moray

West of Maras, travelers are drawn to the enigmatic Incan terraces. Concentric depressions in the earth were terraced and irrigated, some going fifteen levels deep. They’re made of soils from different regions, and rainwater drains down them into either underground channels or natural porous rock. The design suggests they were agricultural experiment stations. It’s as much as 15 °C colder at the bottom of the depression, a perfect way to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The terraces are about two hours from nearby towns. The best way to reach them is by taking a bus along the main road from Cusco to Urubamba and get off on the road to Maras. From there, you’ll need to hire a taxi. The round trip is pricey, but the terraces are a little-known gem, well worth a visit. Many of the thousand varieties of potatoes and maize came from this region, perhaps owed to Incan ingenuity.
