Maras Salt Mines

Maras is known for its unconventional salt mines, about five miles toward Urubamba. The salt evaporation ponds have been used since Inca times. Salty water flows through an underground stream and emerges into a spring. From there, the water is slowly channeled into thousands of terraced polygon ponds. The intricate system required heavy maintenance and cooperation within the Inca community, and still does today. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind salt crystals on the walls and floors of the ponds. The keeper then closes off the supply of water to that pond and scrapes up the salt. Anyone in the community can be a keeper and pass their pond on to their family, as there are thousands of ponds to choose from. Visitors can buy some of the salt at nearby shops. While you can walk from Maras to the ponds, they’re best reached along the main road by bus, since your eyes can slip over them from far away. From there, follow a dirt path on foot.
