La Plaza de Armas del Cusco

Dominated by the Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus, this vibrant square also features colonial architecture and offers several restaurants, cafes, and shops. It’s the main hub for concerts and festivals. During the Inca Empire, it was known as Huacaypata (Square of Warriors) and used for religious processions and to celebrate battle victories. Although only the foundation of the square remains, people still gather there every June for Inti Rayma, the Inca Festival of the Sun. About 25,000 people would come together, parading ancestral mummies and sacrificing hundreds of llamas. Readings from coco leaves would declare the fate of the Inca Empire for that year. Today, the festivities are much the same, minus the mummies but still with one animal sacrifice at the Inca ruins of Saqsaywaman.

Restaurants:

Incanto, on the eastern corner of the Plaza de Armas, combines Italian and Peruvian style. It offers classic pizza and pasta dishes along with Andean like quinoa, alpaca, and olluquito. Another high-end restaurant with a fusion of food is Limo, which combines Peruvian and Japanese in a sleek, modern style. If you’re looking for something more strictly Peruvian and in the mid-price range, try Kusikuy, its house speciality “cuy al horno” (baked guinea pig) .

Other attractions:

Being the historical heart of Cusco, the Plaza de Armas is surrounded by significant buildings of both Incan and Spanish origin. On the northeastern side, view the art in Cusco Cathedral and El Triunfo Church next door. Visit the Convent of Santo Domingo, built on the foundation of the Inca temple complex, Qorikancha, with remnants of the Temple of the Sun still peaking through like the rays of a setting sun.
