This 16th century church was built on the foundation of the palace of Huayna Cápac, the last Inca ruler before the conquistadors took control over Peru. Unlike the Jesuits who built the church, the archbishop did not want it to have more grandeur than the cathedral. The Jesuits were firm in their architectural vision, so the archbishop called on the pope to arbitrate. The pope ruled in favor of the archbishop, but by then, the Jesuits had finished building the church, and so it became the outstanding work of architecture it remains today. The gilded altar beneath a spectacular dome are particularly noteworthy, as well as the view of Cusco from the choir.
