Museum of Memory and Human Rights

After the 1973 coup, the Chilean military took control under dictator Augusto Pinochet. This museum memorializes those whose rights were abused for seventeen long years. The three floors include exhibits, video footage, newspaper excerpts, letters from prisoners to their families, and torture devices. The construction of the museum was announced by current president Michelle Bachelet, who was detained and interrogated under the Pinochet regime as a child. Overall, the museum is an examination of the darkness that emerges when human rights are violated.

What’s nearby?

Across the street, the Quinta Normal Park is a green space with paddle boats, food vendors, and five museums: the National Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and Technology, the Railway Museum, Artequin Museum, and the Museum of Childhood.
The Villa Grimaldi Peace Park (Av. Jose Arrieta 8401 | Comuna de Peñalolén) was built on the site of Villa Grimaldi, one of the places used by the Pinochet regime for the interrogation and torture of political prisoners. Many of these prisoners disappeared within this camp’s walls. The memorial is free, along with the audio guide that is necessary to truly understand the weight of history within its borders.
