Maracanã Stadium

If you’re going to be in Rio during a championship game, expect the very air to be filled with talk of football (soccer) and near-mania levels of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, since the 2016 Olympics, the stadium has been scheduled for renovation and won’t reopen for matches for a few years. Still, you can stop by for a tour of what has held some of the greatest matches in game history. The stadium seats 79,000 people, although it’s made room for almost twice that number during FIFA tournaments. The stadium has also been a stage for cultural icons like Madonna and the Rolling Stones.

What’s nearby?

Besides the hotdogs and similar food, there’s not a lot to eat immediately surrounding the stadium. Nearby, however, the neighborhood of Praça da Bandeira (Bandeira Square) is popular for its restaurants. The nearby metro station leads to downtown Rio, which has a plethora of dining options. Also downtown are the National Historical Museum, the National Museum of Fine Arts, and the unusual but impressive Metropolitan Cathedral.
