Christ the Redeemer Statue

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) stands atop Corcovado Mountain, sculptured like a cross with his arms open wide to embrace the world. It was completed in 1931 as a symbol of Christianity, which the sculptor felt the world needed after the horror and tragedy of World War II. It’s now considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Look closely and you’ll see that the concrete is covered in small stone tiles to accentuate the details. There’s also a small chapel at the base of the statue, although you can imagine riding an escalator up a mountain in a wedding dress would be a little more than a hassle.

Take a Train

A train departs every 30 minutes from the base of the mountain and takes about 20 minutes to reach a set of escalators and elevators, which will carry you the rest of the way to the top.

Hike Corcovado Mountain

A cheaper alternative to the train, as well as a higher chance of seeing capuchins and marmosets. The trailhead is in the northeast corner of Parque Lage in the neighborhood of Jardim Botânico. The hike is moderately strenuous, with some short spurts of steep climbing, and takes about 4 hours round-trip. You can get to the summit without any fee, but you’ll need to pay one if you want want to see the statue and the amazing view of Rio and the surrounding ocean.
