Christ the Redeemer Statue
Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) stands atop Corcovado Mountain, sculptured like a cross with his arms open wide to embrace the world. It was completed in 1931 as a symbol of Christianity, which the sculptor felt the world needed after the horror and tragedy of World War II. It’s now considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Look closely and you’ll see that the concrete is covered in small stone tiles to accentuate the details. There’s also a small chapel at the base of the statue, although you can imagine riding an escalator up a mountain in a wedding dress would be a little more than a hassle.
