Los Glaciares National Park

Los Glaciares National Park is located on the third largest ice cap in the world. Two of its formations steal the show: the sharp-toothed Mt. Fitz Roy and the immense Perito Moreno Glacier. Seeing the glacier’s jagged surface is like viewing whipped blue frosting under a microscope, although its size makes you feel smaller than ever. It stretches 14,760 feet wide and 197 feet above water. From the parking lot on Península Magallanes, follow a short trail down to the glacier. This puts you very close to the face, the best place to capture spellbinding ice falls. Every few years, there’s a major glacier calving, when huge chunks of ice break off in thunderous crashes. If you want an even closer look, Hielo y Aventura takes groups out for an unforgettable hour-long walk across the glacier itself. Other boat tours cruise through Lake Argentino, showing off further glaciers in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field like Spegazzini, Heim, and Upsala.
