Lumbini: The Birthplace of Buddha
Nepal is the meeting place between two world powers: the China (Mongoloids) and India (Indo-Aryans). Both China and India have had and often still have great influence over Nepal.
Although Siddhartha Gautama, a.k.a. Buddha, was born in Nepal, his influence actually spread north to China. Interestingly enough, when his influence came back to Nepal, it was vastly different from its original form. China (or more specifically, Tibet) brought Tibetan Buddhism to the higher elevations of the Himalayas when Tibetan monks crossed high mountain passes into Nepal, fleeing oppression. It is this form of Buddhism that you’ll find while trekking through the Himalayas.
India brought Hinduism’s influence, which is widespread and widely practiced. Hinduism’s influence can be found all over Nepal, and interestingly, fully encompasses Buddhism, since Hindu’s believe that Buddha is a reincarnation of Vishnu. Most of the monuments throughout Kathmandu are significantly influenced by Hinduism.
Being religious or spiritual is not a prerequisite to visiting Nepal. A simple curiosity will suffice.
Traveling through Nepal can be a transformative experience since there are seemingly limitless opportunities to learn about and experience a rich culture, tasty food, and numerous adventure opportunities. It is almost guaranteed that you’ll find or learn something new while visiting Nepal, not to mention the great potential of walking away a better person than when you arrived.

- Chitwan National Park, Nepal
“Our trip to Everest base camp was totally worth it. Having great weather also helped. Experience of a lifetime. One may wonder why not just go directly with a Nepalese trekking company. I checked a few online and, by the typos and the broken English, I got the impression of some lack of professionalism. I’d hate to also get a guide who cuts corners and makes the trip unsafe (yes, we witnessed somebody from another group being flown down because of altitude sickness, they had apparently skipped the acclimatization day). With John and the local guide he picked, we always felt we were in good hands. John also adds contingency days and we actually used one when the flight to Lukla was canceled due to bad weather. Both John and the local guide always went the extra mile to accommodate our needs and to make the trip a great experience. I can only recommend traveling with Volant.”

“We just returned from the trip of a lifetime — Annapurna Base Camp — with Volant Travel. John’s guiding expertise and his superior knowledge of Nepal set us up with the ideal itinerary, and his can-do, make-it-work approach ensured the trip was a success by all measures. We were looking for a guide who had on-the-ground experience in the Himalayas and who could advise us culturally — what luck that we were referred to Volant Travel!”
